Christmas Movies and Jane Austen

While watching Love Actually, it looked very much like a reunion of actors who have appeared in Jane Austen adaptations: Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman. I really enjoyed most of this movie. (I could skip the creep who goes to Wisconsin to find hot women and the porn couple.) But there's so much good chemistry in this film that it has now become a holiday favorite. Another new favorite is The Holiday with Kate Winslet (Sense and Sensibility) and Jude Law. If you include period pieces in my JA/classic connection, I can mention Rufus Sewell, who plays a cad in this movie and Will Ladislaw in Middlemarch (another favorite). Happy Holidays!

I know you are dying to know what my favorite movie is: While You Were Sleeping with Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman.

  1. I haven't seen Love Actually, but I did like The Holiday. While You Were Sleeping is also a favorite of mine, along with Hope Floats.

My favorite version of A Christmas Carol is the one with George C. Scott. The Patrick Stewart version is a close second. Scrooged was funny, but definitely forgettable, in my opinion.

My husband loves Hallmark movies. Argh! Talk about angst! We enjoy the Home Alone movies together, though.

  2. Mary please write faster, Im almost done with Mr. Darcy Bites and it's the last one of yours
that I haven't finished! Merry Christmas!

  3. Robin, My husband watches Hallmark and TLC movies as well. I think it's odd, but it does make for a great husband. :)

Thanks, Lisa. Have you read Becoming Elizabeth Darcy? That just came out this month.

  4. Happy Holidays Mary!
I did not think much of 'The Holiday' movie. I guess it was okay, but I don't need to see it again. I did enjoy 'Love Actually' however, and do plan on watching it again this Saturday.
I really like the comment your anonymous follower has written about writing faster - quite humorous. Do you have anything in the works at present?

  5. Mary, I don't think I've seen "Love Actually", but I love "The Holiday" and "While You Were Sleeping"! I also like to watch "The Bishop's Wife" with Cary Grant. "It's a Wonderful Life" is always a favorite. "Elf" is really funny and a good one to watch.

    Merry Christmas!

  6. Candy, I love The Bishop's Wife, Miracle on 34th Street, The Christmas Story, and The Bells of St. Mary's. I haven't seen Elf yet. I'll have to check that out.

Hi Trez. Do I have anything in the works? Not JA. I'm writing a mystery, and I'm find it slow going. Much harder than writing about D&E.

  7. I liked 'Love Actually', but I wasn't crazy about it...haven't re-watched it since my first viewing. (I *did* watch it on FF for the porn couple, haha) ... LOVE the Holiday though. LOVE IT! I relate a little too painfully-much to Kate Winslet's character, but it's an awesome movie. :o)

  8. Mary, we missed you during our Twitter party during While You Were Sleeping! I love that movie. I haven't watched Love, Actually in awhile, even though I own a copy of it. I may have to watch it this week. Haven't seen The Holiday yet.

When I was a kid my favorite non-cartoon Christmas movie was It Came Upon the Midnight Clear with Mickey Rooney. Another one I haven't seen in forever.

    Merry Christmas! :)

  9. Sandra Bullock was at the top of her game in 'While You Were Sleeping.' For me, it's a tie between 'A Christmas Story' and 'Scrooged.' You'll put your eye out!

What are the grandkids wanting for Christmas?
